Suicide Tragedy at Oyster Bay Boat Ramps

By Torin Wolff Aebly

A tragic scene played out on February 13th at the Oyster Bay boat ramps in Theodore Roosevelt Park, as a 57-year-old man committed suicide by driving his car at high speed off the boat ramp and into the icy waters of Oyster Bay.

The man drove his car into the boat ramp area and opened his trunk, before getting back into the car an accelerating into the water.

According to police, the man had texted his family shortly before killing himself.

The man raced his car into the frigid waters of Oyster Bay at the boat ramp, according to multiple eyewitnesses, and the car quickly sank as water poured into the open trunk.

Witnesses called 911 within seconds, and emergency rescue police and ambulance, and Bay Constable boats arrived at the scene within minutes, but the car was already mostly submerged.

Emergency divers arrived and the rescue boats attached a cable to try to pull the car to the surface, but it was already too late: the Driver had died behind the wheel in the icy waters.

Because of the position of the car, and the rising tide, it took nearly two hours to pull the car out of the water and onto the boat ramps.

Sadly, despite the valiant efforts of the rescue first responders, the man's life could not be saved.

Police have not released the name of the deceased man.
