Oyster Bay Renames Local Street for Billy Joel
By Samantha Carey
As Billy Joel sets up to perform his final shows in Madison Square Garden, his honored presence as a native Long Islander shines through Oyster Bay with a street now named after the musical artist.
Last week, the Town of Oyster Bay presented Joel with the Key to the City and a new street name, “Billy Joel Way.”
This new name will replace a piece of Audrey Avenue. Hundreds of fans of locals surrounded the star at this momentous occasion.
“My mom would've been thrilled. I wish she could see it,” stated Joel, who added that this was one his proudest moments.
Joel, his full name William Martin Joel, was born in the Bronx but grew up in Oyster Bay. Over time he has owned multiple homes in this area - including on Lloyd Neck, Oyster Bay, and now on Centre Island.
“Nothing chronicles the stories of our lives quite like music. And no one has told the story of what it’s like to grow up here on Long Island quite as well as Billy Joel,” said Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino.
“His lyrics speak for every one of us," added Saladino. "We identify with him because we share many of the same feelings, thoughts and experiences. In fact, Billy, your music has become the soundtrack to all of our lives.”
