Laura Carey Named New Huntington Comptroller
By Samantha Carey
At its first meeting of 2024, the Huntington Town Board voted unanimously to appoint Laura Carey as the new Town Comptroller, effective January 3rd. Carey has been serving as Chief of Staff to Town Board member Dr. David Bennardo for the past two years.
Carey succeeds former "Acting Comptroller" Peggy Karayianakis, who resigned last summer. Carey is the first full Town Comptroller confirmed by the Town Board in over nine years.
“I am both excited and humbled by this appointment,” said Carey. “The opportunity to serve, whether it be on the school board, in the town council office, or now comptroller, is a tremendous privilege and awesome responsibility. I plan on throwing every ounce of my energies into maintaining the sound financial footing... for the Town of Huntington.”
Carey has been a South Huntington resident for over 20 years with her family. Her two daughters attended school in the South Huntington School District.
During this time, Carey was a South Huntington Board of Education Trustee for a total of 10 years, with the last several serving as Vice President of the Board.
“Laura has been a priceless member of our team and is really the linchpin of our customer service work,” said Councilman Dr. Bennardo. “We look forward to seeing Laura's trademark energy and work ethic put to important use in our Comptroller's Office.”
Carey will bring over 20 years of financial experience to the table in her new position, including bookkeeping, accounting and business management.
