A Hero is Laid to Rest

​It was a heartbreaking time standing on April 24th in Glen Head, among family and friends, Nassau and Suffolk Police, the Marines, Veterans, American Legion members, biker groups, and residents lining the street, giving their respect and final farewells for Marine Sergeant Robert A. Hendriks, who lost his life on April 8th in Afghanistan, from a roadside bomb.

The day before Sgt. Hendriks, 25, of Locust Valley, was waked at Whitting Funeral Home. A large digital screen with his name and pictures flashed during the day and evening. Many people were there to mourn the loss.

The next morning, The Nassau County Emerald Society Pipe Band marched to the remains of Sgt. Hendricks and played a solemn “Amazing Grace.” The regard for Robert Hendriks as a fallen hero was apparent as the hearse and motorcade lined up for departure to the cemetery. Residents old and young stood watching as the police, and Marines saluted the courage, and memory of Hendriks.

After the motorcade departed, the pipe band played “America....My County Tis of Thee“ as they drifted down the street.

Robert Hendriks was to come home in about a month. He is survived by his father, mother and younger brother, who is also a Marine.

Marine Sergeant Robert A. Hendriks was laid to rest with full military honors during a graveside ceremony attended by hundreds, at Calverton National Cemetery.
